Yes, I know the quote is an unpopular opinion, but I'll explain in just a moment...

As a veteran we oftentimes forget all that we went through to earn that title.

You did what less than 1% of the American population doesn't have the courage to do, or didn't want to do.

Either choice is fine, to each their own, I'm not slamming anyone for their decision it's a free country.

But I want you to remember you're part of that 1%.

The moment you decided you wanted to become a member of the United States Armed Forces was the day your life changed forever.

Think about what that meant.

How did it feel to raise your hand, take that oath, and sign your life away?

Felt great and terrifying all at once, right?

And so you went through hell, did things 99% of the population will never do nor experience, and served our great nation.

You made it to the end and now you've earned that elite and respected title: "Veteran"

Some go on to start a business. Some land a career. And others end up on the streets.

Some even take their own lives to the tune of 22+ per day.

But let me remind you that you're worth more than what you think you are.

Unfortunately though once we go down into a rabbit hole, it's tough to get out.

We surround ourselves with those who "get us" and we can vent to without feeling judged or ridiculed.

And that is a pot of misery. I've been there.

Now before you try and come back at me saying I don't understand, let me tell you that I went through 3 periods of depression and drank a lot.

And it couldn't have come at a worse time - shortly after our daughter was born.

Way to be a supportive husband and father, right?

Slip into depression and drink like a fish.

Way to go Mike...

There were many times in my life that I could've ended up on a different course.

We grew up poor.

As in growing-up-in-Michigan-in-the-dead-of-winter-and-my-parents-couldn't-afford-propane-to-heat-our-trailer-so-they-had-to-turn-on-the-oven-for-heat poor.

But I "made it" and went onto college for one semester.

I realized I didn't have the money or resources to continue so I joined the Air Force in 2001, months before 9/11.

And in 2004 I was nearly killed in a car crash.

It broke my neck, knocked me out for almost 3 days, and left me with a concussion so severe I had double vision for almost 3 months.

Not to mention the full-body aches from being in a car that rolled over and over and over for more than 200 feet (thankfully I had my seatbelt on although I remember nothing).

It took a long time to recover, but not before I was "good enough" for them to send me on one last deployment to the desert before my enlistment ended.

After I got out I failed multiple hiring processes, feelings of doubt, insecurity, and dreams shattered.

All I wanted to do was become a cop and I couldn't even do that.

I didn't commit any crimes, I wasn't an alcoholic, I didn't do drugs, and I had a clean record.

Talk about a dream shatter.

I was confused.

How could someone like me who had a clean record not even able to get a job in law enforcement?

Eventually I got hired on with a department and served 10 years before resigning to start my own business.

There's more but I'll spare your time.

Here's my first tip...

My point being is that although I had many opportunities in my life to go down a different path, I chose not to.

And now I can say I'm living a great life, despite all my health issues, which I'm working on.

But it wasn't an easy journey.

The biggest obstacle that gave me the most problems was hanging around people that were in the same "boat" as me.

What do I mean?

There's a saying in marketing that goes "You are the average of the 5 people you hang around the most."

At first I was like that is stupid, I'm in control of my own life they don't influence me.

But on a subconscious level, they did.

As soon as I took my mentor's advice and started surrounding myself with people who were more successful than me my life began to change.

Not quickly, but over time.

Think about it, if all you did was hang around other vets who cuss out their rear end, drink themselves unconscious, talk trash all day complaining about everything, and swear that the VA is robbing you of your entitled benefit pay, what do you think you're going to do?

In psychology it's called behavior or modeling.

I'm not saying to ditch your veteran friends.

Certainly not.

You need people in your life who you can connect with through shared experiences.

But if you're looking to get in better shape, build a better career, start a business, or improve your relationship with your spouse or kids, then you need to start hanging around those types of people.

I could've let depression take over my life and cause me to continue drinking like a fish, starting fights, or worse, be homeless.

Here's the second thing...

You hear it all the time that your mindset is the most powerful thing that can direct your life.

And it's true.

If you have a weak mindset, you'll become a victim.

If you have a strong mindset, you'll become a victor.

I've spoken to countless veterans on both sides.

And that led me to wonder, why can different people go through the same military process, offered the same benefits, come out in life with completely different outcomes?

I realized that there are many reasons, including experiences such as being ambushed, seeing your friend killed, etc., but the biggest factor is your motivation and drive.

Many veterans lose the motivation and drive to continue.

And that makes me sad.

And here's the third thing...

I chose not to let depression take over my life, and did something about it.

Yes, mental health and PTSD are major influences in people's lives.

But with all the resources out there you can find the help.

You must break out of your daily cycle and find other people to inspire you, find other hobbies to fill in those negative behaviors and habits, and you must take action.

Simply thinking about it does nothing.

By the grace of God I was not killed in that car crash.

I believe I was saved because I had a purpose to fulfill.

And that purpose is to help other veterans see their potential, get out of their own way, and start taking some action to move the needle forward in their life or business.

If you take nothing away from this article, take this...

You are worth more than what you believe you're worth.

You served our country, experienced things most people will never experience, and you have a purpose on this planet.

Go out and fulfill it.

Whether it's your story, your achievements, how you overcame something...

Anything.

Someone out there needs to hear your message.

It just might save their life...

Your time in the military is coming to an end.

Maybe you have a couple of years left.

Maybe it’s 12 months.

Or perhaps you’ve got just a couple of months before you start the separation process.

Whatever your situation is you’ve probably had the butthole puckering thought “What’s next?”

For some people it’s an easy decision while for others it’s a difficult and emotional decision.

For me it was an easy decision.

I wanted to be a cop since I was in 5th grade.

So the military was a stepping stone to get there while gaining one of a kind experiences, seeing new places, and venturing off on my own.

I served six years active duty in the Air Force as Security Forces and an additional three years in the reserves.

But as my active duty time came to an end, things didn’t go as planned.

I failed the California Highway Patrol’s testing process and was stuck with no job.

I was also applying to several agencies but the hiring process takes so long that I couldn’t afford to stay on unemployment (California is expensive as fuck in case you didn’t know…).

Since the military paid decent, I decided to sign up for the reserves while I was going through the testing process for a few agencies.

Looking back I realized that the military didn’t prepare me to enter the civilian world.

Now that I think about it, they hardly did anything, aside from taking my gear and signing off on papers.

Why should they?

It’s their mission to retain members, not lose them prematurely to retirement.

At best I was supposed to attend a week long transition assistance program (TAP) but that never happened.

I was the only certified Security Forces Controller on my shift and they couldn’t find a replacement.

So in order to rush and get someone certified I had to remain working to train the next person.

I literally had to out process on my own days before ETSing with almost no assistance.

If I got a chance to re-do the last twelve months of my military service here is what I would do differently:

1. Actually this one should start way before 12 months but I would make sure I would’ve taken advantage of the tuition assistance program.

Each year active duty members receive a limited amount of tuition money to pay for college.

This is in addition to your GI Bill, but you only get it while you’re active duty.

If you’re guard or reserve and on active orders, or you’re on deployment orders under U.S. Code Title 10, then you should be eligible for TA.

At the time we got $1,200/year but now I believe it’s up to $4,500/year.

These numbers may be different as I researched several sources and each one had a different answer.

To get the right information of course just visit or call your education office.

You get the idea…

I would try to knock out as many courses as possible because once you’re out and decide to continue with school, you use your GI Bill (which you may want to pass down to your kids).

You’re also eligible to receive a book stipend and BAH, depending on how many credit hours you’re taking and other factors.

Again, these are in addition to your GI Bill.

2. Start a side project that will be an extra revenue stream.

Many service members don’t think about the business owner or entrepreneurship journey.

I think it’s mostly due to the push from everyone and their mother for you to get your degree or finish school and get a job afterward.

No one ever talks about starting a business.

But in today’s economy, many military members are struggling to find work, regardless of the industry.

Having “veteran” status might give you a slight edge against other applicants, but don’t think that just because you can check that box means job hunting will be a breeze, or that you’re guaranteed to land that job over everyone else applying.

Spend some time in veteran Facebook groups or on LinkedIn and browse all the posts of veterans struggling to find work and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

It’s sad honestly.

I hate to see veterans struggling.

Especially after all we went through and served our country.

But that’s the reality unfortunately.

Here’s my tip: I would’ve started a side hustle as early as possible.

Here’s why…

Let’s say you did take advantage of the TA program, got your degree, your resume is all squared away and looking pretty, and are all set to land your dream job…

But if you’re unfortunate not to land a job after 6 months of applying to more than 200 jobs like I’ve seen a few veterans post about, now what?

Unemployment doesn’t pay shit and neither does hitting the “super size” button on the cash register in the drive-thru.

Inflation is sky-high for everything.

Literally everything.

The struggle is real.

And unfortunately many veterans, and spouses, are struggling to find jobs that pay enough to support them and their families.

This is the reason why I encourage you to start something on the side as early as possible and get it going.

Business takes time to grow, especially with a limited marking and advertising budget, and inexperience.

And if you want to write to earn money on platforms like SubStack or Medium like I do now, then expect to be writing for a while before you make your first penny, unless you have a marketing strategy in place.

If you want to become a content creator, the same applies.

These all take time to build an audience and gain trust.

Social media is saturated with content and it’s hard to stand out unless you’re entertaining, uniquely you, have a strategic marketing plan, and can create attention grabbing videos and posts.

The content creator industry is exploding and is expected to hit between $450 billion to $480 billion by 2027.

Some colleges even have courses now on how to become a content creator (although I wouldn’t recommend wasting your money on them and instead get a YouTube education, it’s free-ninety-nine).

You’re probably thinking, is this for real? Are people actually making money being a content creator? And if so what types of content?

In order to keep this article short, yes it’s real, yes you can make a lot of money (I know some who are mid to high six-figures per year), and the types of content are everything. Literally.

If there’s an interest in it there’s money to be made.

But that’s for another article.

3. Get my finances in order.

Again this may take more than 12 months but I would make sure whatever debt I could pay off I would.

That would mean being frugal as fuck.

Stop spending money on stupid shit like going to the bars, tittie clubs, a new car, expensive dinners, and whatever else you don’t need.

You don’t know how long you’ll be out of work after you leave if you don’t have something lined up.

And even if you do, in today’s economy, you could be laid off as fast as they hired you.

I spoke to two veterans last week who lost their jobs out of the blue (re-read #2 above again where I mention having “veteran” on your application doesn’t guarantee anything).

Credit card debt is the highest it’s been in years.

People are dipping into savings just to pay bills.

House prices and interest rates are astronomical.

Don’t be fooled by some of the shit you see posted from lenders, real estate agents, and bankers saying “Now is the best time ever to own a home!”

If you can afford it, great!

But do a quick search online and compare housing prices in 2024 to 2020.

We had our house built in 2013 and in just 11 years it went from $250k to now being able to sell for almost $470k if we wanted to (although we have no intentions of moving).

Most of that increase came in just the last 4 years.

Fucking insane wouldn’t you agree?

Are people still buying and selling homes?

Yes of course.

But I just wanted to give you a reality check on how serious the world is outside of military life.

Pay off as much as you can.

Save as much as you can.

You’ll be glad you did, trust me.

Start venturing off into other things of interest such as starting a business, investing, buying/selling businesses, buying/selling commercial real estate, content creation, writing/blogging…

Life after the military can take some time to adjust.

It can be stressful.

But what’s even more stressful is if you don’t have your shit in order when it comes time for you to ETS.

There are many more I could add to this list but looking back over 20+ years ago these three things top my list.

Like I said I hate to see veterans struggle.

Especially on things that could’ve been prevented or had a lesser impact if they had just been told or prepared.

It is my hope that this touches just one military member and changes their life.

A Journey Worth Fighting For

Brian Alvarado, a Marine, lost his life to cancer at the young age of 43 in January 2024 due to exposure to burn pits.

Brian and his wife Rocio were outspoken critics of burn pits. In 2007 he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the neck and throat. He also had an inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness and a rash, PTSD, and hyperthyroidism from chemotherapy and radiation.

Unfortunately Brian’s story isn’t rare. And surviving family members struggle to understand why the government isn’t doing more to protect its military members from these toxic and carcinogenic burn pits.

If you’ve never been around a burn pit, they stink something horrible. Something I’ve never smelled before.

Items burned are, but not limited to: electronics, batteries, medical waste (including body parts & fluids), trash, plastics, metal, and more.

According to the government’s website on burn pits, they started collecting data on burn pits and exposures in 2014, but I personally didn’t see a serious push until around 2022 when I started getting emails from the VA and being asked about it during checkups.

Many veterans have filed claims related to burn pit exposure, with a lot of them being denied.

Survivors of burn pit family members have been searching for answers while even one, Gina Cancelino, wife of deceased burn pit victim Marine Corp Gunnery Sgt Joseph Cancelino, fought for benefits and was denied twice before being approved on the third time in 2023.

Progress With Challenges

Why was the third claim successful? Because President Biden signed the Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act in August 2022.

One group, Burn Pits 360, is at the forefront of this advocacy effort.

Retired U.S. Army Reserve Capt. Le Roy Torres and his wife Rosie Lopez Torres started Burn Pits 360 after Capt. Torres returned from a deployment in 2007 to Iraq with difficulty breathing.

He was diagnosed with constrictive bronchiolitis and brain injuries resulting from exposure to toxins.

Like most burn pit victims, Capt. Torres and his wife faced challenges getting the VA to accept that his illness was service-connected and that the government had an obligation to support him.

In an interview with the Epoch Times, Ms. Torres said “What really forced us into this journey of advocacy was just basically us dealing with our own injustice.”

Since the PACT Act’s passage, they have connected 23 cancers and respiratory illnesses related to burn pit exposures. These have been linked to deployments to the Middle East since 1990, including exposure to Agent Orange during the 1960s and 70s. These exposures were newly added as a service-connected presumption for illnesses related to Agent Orange.

And while veterans and the VA are moving toward solutions, many exposed veterans are still worried about making sure their families are taken care of after they are gone.

Zero Percent Disability Rating

While constrictive bronchiolitis is one of the illnesses identified in the PACT Act, some veterans aren’t seeing a difference in their disability ratings.

Constrictive bronchiolitis constricts the airway branches of the lungs making it difficult to breathe.

Currently, the VA guidelines for assessing disability ratings for service-connected illnesses and injuries prevents evaluators from combining constrictive bronchiolitis with other respiratory illnesses to obtain a higher rating.

What ends up happening is that although the evaluator may award a veteran’s service-connected constrictive bronchiolitis illness in their records, their condition results in a zero-percent rating, which also means zero compensation.

Lawmakers have addressed VA Secretary Denis McDonough in a letter urging him to expedite the disability rating process.

“Veterans have waited decades for benefits and recognitions for health conditions related to their toxic exposure,” the lawmakers wrote. “Outdated VA regulations should not deny them earned benefits the PACT Act has provided.”

K2 Veterans

Service members deployed to Karshi–Khanabad Air Base (also known as K2 or Camp Stronghold Freedom) in Uzbekistan from 2001 to 2005 were exposed to radioactive materials, spilled jet fuel, and asbestos left behind by the Soviets during the Soviet era.

Although K2 is acknowledged by the VA as a potential burn pit exposure area, service members who were there also face different illnesses unique to that area, including neurological, autoimmune, endocrine, blood, and bone disorders.

The Stronghold Freedom Foundation (SFF) has connected with approximately 5,000 out of the more than 15,000 veterans who were deployed to K2 between 2001 and 2005. This advocacy group has gathered extensive records indicating that processed uranium and decommissioned chemical agents contaminated the K2 site, likely leading to numerous illnesses among the deployed personnel.

The SFF is now advocating for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to expand the list of presumptive illnesses associated with service at K2​ (Valor4Vet)​​ (Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines)​.

Several veterans have reported severe health issues, including various cancers, believed to be linked to their exposure to these contaminants. Despite these findings, many affected veterans have faced challenges in obtaining recognition and benefits from the VA, as current regulations do not automatically include Uzbekistan as a qualifying location for certain health conditions and disability claims​ (Berry Law)​.

The foundation continues to push for legislative changes and greater awareness to ensure these veterans receive the necessary support and healthcare​ (Valor4Vet)​​ (Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines).

In May of 2024, The SFF followed up with a letter, pointing to specific legal authorities that Mr. McDonough could cite to expand coverage to K2 veterans.

“At very senior levels of the VA, we’ve been able to have conversations on a regular basis, and they definitely know K2 and the importance of it,” SFF Executive President Matt Erpelding said in a phone interview. He said that the SFF sees some signs of progress with the VA.

Mr. Erpelding and the SFF are optimistic that the VA secretary will soon instruct the department to provide compensation to K2 veterans for a broader range of their illnesses.

Let’s say you did take advantage of the TA program, got your degree, your resume is all squared away and looking pretty, and are all set to land your dream job…

But if you’re unfortunate not to land a job after 6 months of applying to more than 200 jobs like I’ve seen a few veterans post about, now what?

Unemployment doesn’t pay shit and neither does hitting the “super size” button on the cash register in the drive-thru.

Inflation is sky-high for everything.

Literally everything.

The struggle is real.

And unfortunately many veterans, and spouses, are struggling to find jobs that pay enough to support them and their families.

This is the reason why I encourage you to start something on the side as early as possible and get it going.

Business takes time to grow, especially with a limited marking and advertising budget, and inexperience.

And if you want to write to earn money on platforms like SubStack or Medium like I do now, then expect to be writing for a while before you make your first penny, unless you have a marketing strategy in place.

If you want to become a content creator, the same applies.

These all take time to build an audience and gain trust.

Social media is saturated with content and it’s hard to stand out unless you’re entertaining, uniquely you, have a strategic marketing plan, and can create attention grabbing videos and posts.

The content creator industry is exploding and is expected to hit between $450 billion to $480 billion by 2027.

Some colleges even have course now on how to become a content creator (although I wouldn’t recommend wasting your money on them and instead get a YouTube education, it’s free-ninety nine).

You’re probably thinking, is this for real? Are people actually making money being a content creator? And if so what types of content?

In order to keep this article short, yes it’s real, yes you can make a lot of money (I know some who are mid to high six-figures per year), and the types of content is everything. Literally.

If there’s an interest in it there’s money to be made.

But that’s for another article.

3. Get my finances in order.

Again this may take more than 12 months but I would make sure whatever debt I could pay off I would.

That would mean being extremely frugal.

Stop spending money on stupid shit like going to the bars, tittie clubs, a new car, expensive dinners, and whatever else you don’t need.

You don’t know how long you’ll be out of work after you leave if you don’t have something lined up.

And even if you do, in today’s economy, you could be laid off as fast as they hired you.

I spoke to two veterans last week who lost their jobs out of the blue (re-read #2 above again where I mention having “veteran” on your application doesn’t guarantee anything).

Credit card debt is the highest it’s been in years.

People are dipping into savings just to pay bills.

House prices and interest rates are astronomical.

Don’t be fooled by some of the shit you see posted from lenders, real estate agents, and bankers saying “Now is the best time ever to own a home!”

If you can afford it, great!

But do a quick search online and compare housing prices in 2024 to 2020.

We had our house built in 2013 and in just 11 years it went from $250k to now being able to sell for almost $470k if we wanted to (although we have no intentions of moving).

Most of that increase came in just the last 4 years.

F’n insane wouldn’t you agree?

Are people still buying and selling homes?

Yes of course.

But I just wanted to give you a reality check on how serious the world is outside of military life.

Pay off as much as you can.

Save as much as you can.

You’ll be glad you did, trust me.

Start venturing off into other things of interest such as starting a business, investing, buying/selling businesses, buying/selling commercial real estate, content creation, writing/blogging…

Life after the military can take some time to adjust.

It can be stressful.

But what’s even more stressful is if you don’t have your shit in order when it comes time for you to ETS.

There are many more I could add to this list but looking back over 20+ years ago these three things top my list.

Like I said I hate to see veterans struggle.

Especially on things that could’ve been prevented or had a lesser impact if they had just been told or prepared.

It is my hope that this touches just one military member and changes their life.

Who is Affected?

The breach potentially affects millions of AT&T customers. Given the nature of the data compromised, individuals who have used AT&T services in the past decade could be at risk. This includes current and former customers, as well as individuals who may have interacted with AT&T’s network in various capacities, such as through subsidiary services or partner networks.

Understanding Watermelon Varieties

Before diving into the specifics of choosing the sweetest watermelon, it's essential to know the different types of watermelons. There are more than 1,200 varieties worldwide, but they generally fall into four main categories:

1. Seedless Watermelons: These are very popular due to their convenience. They usually have a crisp texture and can be just as sweet as seeded varieties.

2. Seeded Watermelons: Traditional watermelons with seeds. They are often larger and known for their sweetness and rich flavor.

   • A ripe watermelon will have a dull rather than shiny appearance. Shiny skin indicates that the melon is underripe.

6. Weight:

   • Pick up the watermelon; it should feel heavy for its size. Watermelons are 92% water, so a heavier melon is likely to be juicier and sweeter.

7. Sound Test:

   • Give the watermelon a tap. A ripe watermelon will produce a deep, hollow sound. If the sound is dull, the melon might be overripe or underripe.

8. Stem Condition:

   • Check the stem area. A dried-up stem indicates the watermelon was picked at the right time. A green stem suggests it was picked too early.

• Buy In Season: Watermelons are best during their peak season, typically from May to September. Off-season watermelons are more likely to be less sweet and flavorful.

Most of us know that turmeric has powerful health benefits including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

The bright color is distinguishable and is used in many recipes.

But what people may not realize is that turmeric is one of the most popular foods susceptible to food fraud.

In other words, alterations that dilute its effectiveness or purity are then sold to unsuspecting consumers.

In 2021 turmeric had about an 11% adulteration level, according to a study throughout Europe.

These farmers or producers will add coloring or dyes, of which either haven’t been approved safe for food or have been known to cause health issues.

Other ingredients used are lead chromate, Sudan I and Tartrazine, Sudan Red G, acid orange, or metanil yellow, with lead chromate being the most dangerous.

Lead chromate is known to cause kidney and brain damage as well as anemia. It can also damage your central nervous system.

In 2019 researchers found seven of nine turmeric growing crops in Bangladesh to have evidence of turmeric containing lead chromate with levels often exceeding 500 times the limit.

And many of the turmeric grown in that region made its way onto U.S. grocery store shelves.

So how did this start?

Part of it originated in 1988 when a massive flood ruined the crops in Bangladesh, causing growers to use lead chromate to give turmeric back it’s brightly known color, which resulted in a fresher appearance and sold for higher dollar.

But although that practice isn’t used anymore (or so we suspect) that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen elsewhere around the world which are then sold to us as unsuspecting consumers.

Want to know a couple of tests to determine if your turmeric is pure?

First, pure turmeric leaves a yellow stain on your hands when rubbed together.

If there is no stain then chances are your turmeric isn’t pure and has been altered.

The second way to test it is to pour turmeric powder into a glass of water. Pure turmeric slowly sinks to the bottom as residue whereas adulterated versions will remain mostly at the top.

Give it about 60 seconds or so and you should see it start to sink.

The term can be ambiguous and often leaves consumers questioning what they are actually consuming. In this article, we'll delve into the definition of natural flavors from both the perspective of food companies and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

I’ll also touch on the legal loopholes that may allow food companies to include less-than-ideal ingredients under the guise of natural flavors, potentially deceiving consumers.

Definition of Natural Flavors

From the Food Companies’ Perspective

Food companies often use the term "natural flavors" to market their products as healthier or more wholesome. According to food manufacturers, natural flavors are derived from natural sources such as fruits, vegetables, spices, and other plant or animal materials. These flavors are intended to enhance the taste of food and make it more appealing without adding artificial ingredients.

From the FDA's Perspective

The FDA defines natural flavors as substances extracted, distilled, or otherwise derived from plant or animal matter, either directly or through roasting, heating, or fermentation. These can include essential oils, oleoresins, essences, or extractives. The FDA’s Code of Federal Regulations states that natural flavors are derived from:

• Spices

• Fruits or fruit juices

• Vegetables or vegetable juices

• Edible yeast

• Herbs, bark, buds, roots, leaves, or similar plant materials

• Meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof

The goal is to add flavor rather than nutritional value. According to the FDA, the natural flavor must come from a natural source, but the process of creating these flavors can be complex and involve numerous steps and chemicals.

Legal Loopholes and Consumer Deception

Despite the seemingly straightforward definition, the term "natural flavors" can be misleading. There are several legal loopholes that food companies can exploit, leading to potential consumer deception:

1. Broad Definition: The FDA’s broad definition allows for a wide range of substances to be classified as natural flavors. This means that even though a flavor is derived from a natural source, it may undergo significant processing and include various additives and solvents during its production.

2. Additives and Solvents: The extraction and processing of natural flavors often involve solvents and additives, some of which may not be as natural or healthy as consumers might expect. For example, while the flavor compound itself might be natural, the solvents used in its extraction, such as propylene glycol or glycerin, might not be.

3. Lack of Transparency: Food companies are not required to disclose the specific sources or methods used to derive natural flavors. This lack of transparency means consumers are often unaware of the actual ingredients or processes involved in the natural flavors listed on product labels.

4. Health Implications: Some natural flavors can contain hidden allergens or other substances that might not be healthy. For instance, "natural flavor" could include components from allergens such as dairy, soy, or nuts, without explicitly listing them on the label, potentially causing issues for those with food sensitivities.

5. Market Perception: The term "natural" can create a halo effect, leading consumers to believe a product is healthier than it may actually be. A study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest found that many consumers are misled by the term "natural," associating it with health benefits that are not necessarily present.

Real-World Examples

To illustrate, consider a natural strawberry flavor. The natural flavor might indeed be derived from strawberries, but the extraction process could involve numerous chemicals and additives.

In another example, vanilla's natural flavor could be derived from beaver castoreum, a secretion used historically in flavorings and perfumes, which is natural but not what most consumers would expect.

Understanding what "natural flavors" means requires looking beyond the marketing claims and considering the regulatory definitions and potential loopholes. While natural flavors do originate from natural sources, the processes involved in their production and the lack of transparency can lead to consumer deception. By being aware of these nuances, consumers can make more informed choices about the foods they consume.
